Moraine State Park boasts 16,725 acres and is located in western Pennsylvania, not far from Butler, PA. Lake Arthur is 3,225 acres and you can take your boat to Moraine, fish, or swim at the beach!
The park has many activities that are great for a day trip of exploration and fun. Let’s go ahead and list all of the best reasons to visit!
Biking at Moraine State Park
One of the best parts of Moraine State Park is a paved seven-mile biking trail. This is pretty uncommon, we have visited many state parks in Pennsylvania and have not found another that has had a paved trail.
There is a shop that allows you to rent bikes, as well as get some snacks or refreshments. So even if you don’t have a bike or don’t want to haul one with you, you can experience the trail!
Swimming at the beach
Moraine also has a large parking lot for their well maintained 550-foot beach located on the north shore. This is a very popular destination in the summer, and for good reason.
There is also another beach at the south shore that is 400 feet long, and has a volleyball net and a playground.
Both of them have a nice place to shower and change and get snacks and refreshments. Additionally, the beaches and snack stands are open from memorial day to labor day.
Hiking at Moraine State Park
Moraine contains more than 29 miles of trails for hiking, with all sorts of difficulty levels. If you love hiking, this is a great park to visit for a day trip.
The hiking trails in the woods offer some scenic views, specifically the Glacier Ridge Trail, which is part of the North Country National Scenic Trail. This trail leads to the Jennings Environmental Center, which is near Slippery Rock, PA.
Fishing at Moraine State Park
Fishing at Moraine State Park is pretty great, honestly. You can catch Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, Channel Catfish, Northern Pike, and Black Crappie in Lake Arthur.
The PA Boat Commission also stocks some other fish, such as Walleye, Muskellunge and Hybrid Striped Bass.
Moraine offers a lot of diversity as far as fish go, many other state parks do not offer near as many types.
There are two fishing spots that are great for children. They are located at the Bear Run Boat Launch, and the Park Road Boat Launch.
You are also able to go ice fishing here, although the ice thickness is not monitored, so you will have to figure that out yourself. Ice fishing is a bit risky, so be careful and do so at your own risk. This is a great resource if you’re new to ice fishing.
For more information regarding fishing, check out the PA State Park website here.
Disc Golf at Moraine State Park
This park offers an 18 hole disc golf course, which is very unique and we have not seen this at any other park. If you’re visiting for a day, we highly recommend trying it out.
Disc golf is pretty similar to golfing except with frisbees. Check out this page to learn how to play.
Cabins by the lake
If you’re trying to stay the night, there are only two options. You can either stay in one of the cabins by the lake, or you can rent one of the organized group tenting sites.
The cabins have electric heat, a bathroom and shower, a kitchen, and bunk beds that sleep 6 people. Each of them have a dock on Lake Arthur during the summer season also. You can also rent them year round. Two of them accept dogs for an additional fee, and those are numbers 7 and 11.
Boat, Kayak or Canoe Rental
Luckily, Moraine also rents out pontoon boats, kayaks, and canoes. You can check out the full list of offerings at this website.
You of course can bring your own boats, kayaks or canoes, but it is great that you don’t need to!
Skiing and winter activities
You can ski on two of the trails, weather and snow permitting. The trails are the Sunken Garden trail, and the Pleasant Valley trail.
The south shore also offers a great place for sledding, the pleasant view picnic area.
Moraine State Park has a ton of activies you can take part in. The greatest thing is that almost everything you need can be rented, whether you want to go for a bike ride or take out a boat, kayak or canoe. You can also buy the discs for disc golf near the beginning of the course.
One of the biggest attractions is the well maintained beaches with snack and concession areas. If you live in western Pennsylvania, why not stop over for a day at the beach during the summer?
